Inside Water Paper Paint

Above are a few glimpses into my book Water Paper Paint including shots of a comprehensive chapter about Palettes and also one of the very first projects I wrote, Painting an Arrangement. It's one of my faves. (We do know how I like to arrange things.)
And isn't Rachel's photography in the book just beautiful? Her expertise for how to shoot the process photos and the art itself made me feel confident in how the work was being portrayed. Plus she was so good at understanding my iterations when my brain was occupied with all the art making, writing, and the fact that the camera was only a few inches away from where I was painting! :)

If you want to see more peeks, you can preview it over here.

in the studio

I worked well past dark last night to finish up this blue painting. And here you can see my set up table, which is a little wild with props right now.

There's more painting in store this weekend. :) I hope you have a good one too!

Little things

So the roll of film I had been waiting on turned out to be full of disappointments but thankfully some of the important ones are good. The day I took the top shot in early October I was walking back from the farmer's market on a Saturday morning and the red leaves hugging the tree caught my eye. Within a week they were gone. The lower one I took the day Granddaddy passed, and found myself walking about town in a strange mix of bewilderment and awareness.

M. made dinner again last night. Since I don't know how to grill (something that is working in my favor right now) and we're currently without a stove/oven (we had the gas line moved) he's been taking charge. He grilled some of our green peppers and stuffed them inside a grilled delicata squash with chick peas, homemade salsa and vermont cheddar. (Delicata squash may be my new fave.) And I'm happy to have a bit left over for my lunch.

Three links, art that makes use of little things:
> Stipple engraved convict love tokens from the 18th and 19th centuries. Look at this one.

> The work of chewing gum artist Ben Wilson.

> Last Leaf, a video by Ok Go using stop animation and drawings on many pieces of toast.

On my easel today

Title tbd, oil on canvas, 12 in. x 12 in.

Here's a peek at what I'm working on today. I take pictures of my pieces while working so I can look back at where a piece begins and see the stages. Sometimes it helps me solve problems in the painting as well to see it in a photo.

My new "vessels series" of oil paintings will soon be available at Artstream Gallery for a show entitled Newness with Lisa Solomon and Jen Garrido.

Stay tuned for more!

weekendings

These ocean shots are from last weekend when I was visiting with family. Happily I got to walk on the beach with my sister one evening. Life got busy after my return to Kansas but I don't want to neglect to mention that I am thankful for the time I was with them (and had fun listening to 80's music on the drive with my sister). :)

This weekend too has had it's perks including M. taking charge of dinners both Friday & Saturday evening, with no prompting from me, I might add. Plus we did in fact get to eat at Wheatfields Saturday morning! So the only cooking I did this weekend were corn scones, granola and then I tried to make chocolate covered pretzels, which turned out slightly dampish.

Oh, does anyone have good movie recommendations? We sorely need to update our Netflix queue. Last night we watched Flyboys, which I liked. (And how cute is Mr. Franco in that movie?)

I like this photo set by Elisabeth Dunker, the country house.
And the stripes on these bright ceramics by Heather Braun-Dahl, especially the mugs.

Did you have a good weekend?
