A friday bouquet

The monoprint in the background is by artist and friend, Emily Gaines Demsky

This week was so busy it completely got away from me, but now, happily, it is Friday. The weather is about perfect, sunny and cool enough to have windows open. During these last summer days I want to dive into the teetering stack of library books on my nightstand, and right now, that is the only goal I am setting for the weekend. Hopefully next week I will emerge refreshed and perhaps a little more present around here. :)

I hope you have a good one,
H

1001

1001 is a recent renovation and building project my husband and his company struct/restruct LLC, just completed. They did such an amazing job renovating the original 1880's form and adding new construction with features like : reclaimed slate shingles for part of the exterior siding, glass ceiling in the front entry, locally milled aromatic cedar flooring and stair treads as well as original pine flooring, cement and butcher block kitchen counter tops made from recycled yellow pine studs saved from the original house, kitchen floors of recycled black slate roof shingles they extracted from an 1852 regional house, and many more beautiful custom features throughout.

Check out more shots of the finished project here and the incredible transformation process here.

it's time

Since today is the last day of "summer" break before teaching business begins next week, it seems like a good time to tidy up the studio. Time to start with a fresh palette, so to speak. Even though I did a lot of organizing at the beginning of the summer, papers and bits have slowly slipped back into piles of clutter. Granted, these stacks can serve a purpose, a reflection of a layered process, (yeah, let's call it that) I am ready for clarity, and spare surroundings. So, Rachel, I also declare this "get the studio in shape day!". :)

Here's a few links that caught my eye this week:
+ Got a worn leather belt that needs new life? Try Alicia's cuff tutorial.
+ Martha's necklace and inkBLOT designs in her shop.

Tonight we will be checking out the new Final Fridays arts events here in town. I'm excited to see people out in attendance, it's been quite the buzz lately.

Have a good weekend,
H

film

Simply sharing some film shots today of an impromptu visit to watch the sunset at the wetlands after our anniversary dinner last month. Before I took these I was a feeling a little bored by my surroundings. But let me tell you, when we came upon the lily pad pond my mouth gaped and I stood, overwhelmed, amazed. Where did this otherworldly place come from? We had never seen this in the wetlands before. It truly was a wonder. So much so, that when I turned to leave, my footing slipped from the bank (improper footwear), I flapped my arms like a strange bird and nearly fell in. (Luckily M. grabbed me.)

garden haiku

dahlia in our garden

This morning I was watering our new fall garden seedlings, appreciating the cooler temps, and was inspired to write a haiku. Writing a haiku is, in my mind, similar to how I draw at times, with an austere hand. Speaking of which, somewhat on a whim, I decided to reopen my gallery shop last night. In it you will find recently exhibited gallery pieces that attest to this idea of visual haiku poetry. I do have plans for my shop in the near future.

And with this haiku, I bid you good day.
