AUGUST POLAROID PROJECT updated Tuesday 9.11

PROJECT SUMMARY

Every day for the month of August (actually began 7.31) I took one or two polaroids and documented information and thoughts about the subject. I have been documenting the project on my other blog, drawing on the walls.
The theme: ideas and stories of HOME.

M. just milled this wood yesterday from logs we had been storing and today he stacked it.
It is a very tall 8 ft.

DAY 2
Wednesday 8.1

8.1
I missed seeing a friend off on his moving day. At least I was able to speak to him on the phone, however I missed getting a picture of his moving truck. So I took one of his old apartment. He's on to a new HOME now. See you later brother J.

DAY 3
Thursday 8.2
left: 5:57 pm, right: 5:43 pm
8.2
M. and friend E. have been putting the new metal roof on our fixer upper house today. The entire construction process is one of falling down and building up; one of times of discouragement and times of encouragement.I have taken three polaroids today, testing old film with new (above). Now I'm trying to figure the LMS (light management system). Black arrow means you want less light and white arrow means you want more light?? I don't know. You know, it seems like it is something very simple but then I don't do simple. I don't do macaroni & cheese from a box because I can't follow directions.

DAY 4
Friday 8.3
4:12 pm
8.3
At what moment did Kansas become HOME?
I was realizing as we're driving through the Flint Hills of Kansas, that Kansas is my HOME. I've lived here nine years and always tell people I "live in" Kansas. Saying you're "from" Kansas is different. I think it's about time I can say "I'm from" Kansas. It's like saying it is HOME.
It's a hard transition to make, partly because I didn't see it coming. I didn't plan to live here or be from here. I didn't plan for Kansas to be HOME.

DAY 5
Saturday 8.4

Saturday at HOME.
Not many words.
When I was in kindergarten, for RIF day I chose a book to keep with no words, only illustrations. The pictures told the story. The image I remember the most was a restaurant scene, and a frog was jumping out of a lady's salad as she was raising a bite to her mouth.

We were out riding bikes around Calibogue Cay and the sound.
My sister took the photo on the left and I took the one on the right. I was proud of her. She got down on the ground, on her back, raised her head like she was doing sit-ups to take this picture. I was watching her as she was framing her subject.
Thunder was rumbling, threatening, but not producing.

"Did you say Mama or Mom?", I said.
"Mama".
"Although Mom says she stands with her hands on her hips like Mama used to."
On the other side: Morning glories in the photo on the right sprawling across the hot sand. My paternal grandmother used to wake us in the morning saying in a sing-song voice "Morning glories". We would stay with them for a week or two in the summers.Today is our parents' 39th wedding anniversary.

DAY 18
Friday 8.17
left: 1:37 pm, right: 10:03am
8.17
sometimes a mother's honesty is glaring.
glaring |ˈgle(ə)ri ng | adjective 1 [ attrib. ] giving out or reflecting a strong or dazzling light : the glaring sun.
notes: I took the photo on the right first and wasn't happy with it (when it developed) because it was so light. Then a few hours later after running errands I returned home and took the one on the left. It is in the alley by a neighbor's garage; queen anne's lace, that I look at every time M. and I go for a walk. Finally now it is browning in the late summer sun. I decided however, that I like the two together when I think about the word "glaring"; reflecting light and dazzling light.

DAY 23
Wednesday 8.22
12:45 pm

The sky is blue, like in September, and the clouds are puffy.

It is windy here today.

DAY 24
Thursday 8.23
9:21 am
8.23
swish, swish, swish.
As I'm sweeping I recall a conversation M. and I had months ago about my wanting to get a dustbuster. They make so much noise he said, not like the quiet swish swish of a broom. Sometimes I sweep the floor of a morning before he's awake. We still do not have a dustbuster and now I don't really mind.

Monday, 8.27
left: 8:00 pm, right: 8:16 pm
8.27
We walked from our house to the hardware store to get some foam brushes and stopped at the grocery store next door to it. We needed ice cream.

"They don't like you to take pictures in stores, they might make you stop", M. said.
So we thought about our ice cream selection until the aisle was empty.
"Are you ready, you're not ready", M. said.
"Go".
I felt so sneaky.

Then M. took my picture "hugging" the ice cream on our walk home.

It's 10:14 now, I just finished my ice cream, with chocolate sauce, and peanuts.
. . . . . . .
. . . . . . .
DAY 29
Tuesday, 8.28
4:31 pm
8.28
I walked through the park on the way home from work. I stopped to pick up a bar of sage soap at au marche along the way, we've been using little bits of soap for several days.
I could have taken a photo of the limestone courthouse building with the rose bushes in bloom in front, the splashing fountain (like a photographer was doing), the gazebo that is popular for weddings and outdoor concerts, the homeless man asleep on the bench, or the girl sitting pretzel style in the grass reading, but I took a polaroid of these trees and their shadows.
