Hi (M. is checking out the cool floor)

Hi, Sorry I missed yesterday's pairings, I was laid out with a migraine all afternoon. But I'm back with a pair and some extra shots from a little day trip we took to Topeka back in April. We went to a regional arts event called ReThink Topeka, where we toodled around, bumped into friends and I enjoyed different scenery with my camera. All these photos are from that Saturday afternoon.

This weekend I think we'll stick around and get out in the sunshine.

Have a nice one!

Wednesday pair

A landscape pairing today, one that is about the feeling of open space.  The left one is a view of Kansas City from atop the Bloch building at the Nelson Atkins Museum and the right was a little farm I had never seen before.  We spotted it one evening on a bike ride.  It surprised me tucked back in an area where warehouses and university buildings dominate, yet it remains.

Some lovely pairs you will not want to miss by Alicia and some by Brian, who is posting pairs all week.

See ya tomorrow,
H

This morning the sun is finally shining and I'm getting excited for summer. Yesterday M. lay some straw around our pepper and tomato plants, 16 tomato plants and 15 peppers in all, I think we're set. And we ate our first two ripe strawberries, small and sweet!

The photo on the left I took recently in our garden and the black and white image is from all the way back in 1998. I took an infrared photography workshop at Arrowmont during my stay as a resident artist. The boy crouching in the middle is so small and frail compared to the boulders around him.  I put these two together for a number of reasons, the balance of simplicity that the tulip image brings to the rocky scape, the idea of water, and the lone figures in each.

I'm on a major cleansing and organizing spree this week. Oh the things I'm finding that I forgot we even had. This afternoon though I will take advantage of the sunshine and do some gardening and hopefully discover a few more strawberries.

See ya,
H

Monday pair

Let's begin this week of diptychs, shall we? There's something about the creative exercise of putting images together that helps my brain work; to notice relationships, make connections, think about composition or mood, invent a narrative perhaps, and hopefully gain new ideas. When I was in grad school part of my thesis entailed pairing dichotomies which took the form of arranging different square panel paintings. And now when I work with other artists, it is always so interesting to combine ideas and imagery, as Alicia and I did for two years in The Noticing Project and Jen and I with our Inspired project.

I took both of the film photos above while walking around the neighborhood. If you click the image to view larger you may be able to see the albino robin chirping away on the platform in front of the truck. He is almost an undetectable detail in the center of his landscape, but to me, perched up there he is as poised as the weather vane on the garage.

You're more than welcome to join in this week of diptychs, let me know if you are.

Friday pair

Getting a jumpstart on a week of diptychs. I paired these together because of the color and how the feeling of two portraits on the left is reflected in the two roses on the right. That little rose bush in our garden is from the mother plant that my husband's ancestors brought over from Russia in the 1800's. Click image to view larger.

More pairs next week.

Have a great weekend!
